Thermopolis 🔶 Flex Night
🔶 Open — decide on the roadMadison check-in Fri is the only hard anchor
DoWyoming Dinosaur Center before leaving Thermopolis (real-fossil dig tour — book ahead). Then pick your Thursday night from the options below.
Flex night — two main plays A · Stay a 2nd night in Thermopolis: no second booking, more pool/hot-springs time for the kids, then a 5 AM Friday run straight to Madison (~6 hr). Simplest and cheapest — one longer Friday drive.
B · Push to Dubois: ~2.5 hr from Thermopolis, cheap, on-route. Twin Pines Lodge or similar — rarely sells out midweek. Kids: bighorn sheep center, Nana's bowling/arcade, giant jackalope. Splits the drive so Friday is an easy ~3 hr.
Wildcard: a last-minute Togwotee or Jackson-corridor deal if the budget/mood allows.
Decide by Thursday lunchEither works — staying put is one fewer logistics headache; Dubois buys you a shorter Friday. A quick check that morning tells you whether to book Dubois ahead or just relax in Thermopolis. Don't go hunting for a room at 7 PM.

In the Parks

Four Yellowstone nights, three Teton nights. What to hit from each basecamp.

Yellowstone Morning Game Plan

The marquee sights are crowd-free only at dawn. The plan: two true early days (geysers from Madison, wildlife from Canyon) and two relaxed travel/arrival days. Mid-June sunrise is ~5:35 AM, so first light is usable by 5:15.

Grand PrismaticMidway lot fills by 9–9:30. Dawn = empty boardwalk; mid-morning = steam burns off for the photo.
Old FaithfulErupts ~every 90 min — sync to the posted prediction, not the clock. Upper Basin is quiet before 9.
Hayden ValleyDawn or nothing. Bison/bear/wolves are roadside in the first 90 min of light; pullouts fill fast.

Fri Jun 12 · Arrival (Madison)

Relaxed
You arrive ~11:30 AM — no early start. Ease in; save the dawn moves for Saturday.
11:30 AMSet up camp at Madison
1:00 PMLower geyser basins — Fountain Paint Pots + Firehole Lake Drive (crowds thinner in afternoon)
4:30 PMGrand Prismatic at late-afternoon light — far smaller crowd than midday, second-best light
EveFirehole swim or camp dinner · ranger program at Madison amphitheater

Sat Jun 13 · Geyser Dawn (Madison)

★ Early start
The big one. Grand Prismatic to yourself, then Old Faithful + Upper Basin before the buses.
5:45 AMDepart camp (Madison → Midway ~20 min)
6:10 AMGrand Prismatic / Midway Basin — near-empty lot, boardwalk to yourselves
6:45 AMGrand Prismatic Overlook hike (~1 mi up from Fairy Falls trailhead) — the famous from-above view in good morning light. Note: the overlook is open, but Fairy Falls itself (trail north of the overlook) is closed for a 2026 bear closure — turn around at the overlook
8:00 AMDrive to Old Faithful (~15 min); check predicted eruption time at the visitor center
8:15 AMUpper Geyser Basin boardwalk (Castle, Grotto, Morning Glory) — densest geysers on earth, quiet before 9
~by 10Catch the Old Faithful eruption per prediction · then ease off — you're ahead of the crowds
PMNap at camp / Firehole swim
2026 bear closure near Old FaithfulAfter a May 4 grizzly encounter on the Mystic Falls Trail, the park has a backcountry closure west of Grand Loop Road (Fairy Falls Trail north of the Grand Prismatic Overlook, Sentinel/Imperial Meadows, Summit Lake, plus a few backcountry sites and Firehole tributaries). The boardwalks are unaffected — Grand Prismatic Overlook, Midway Geyser Basin, Black Sand Basin, and the whole Upper Geyser Basin / Old Faithful are open. Just don't plan the Fairy Falls or Mystic Falls hikes, and check posted closures at the visitor center the morning of.

Sun Jun 14 · Transition (Madison → Canyon)

Travel day
Short hop via Norris. Hit Norris before its lot fills, then set up at Canyon.
8:00 AMPack up camp
8:30 AMNorris Geyser Basin en route — park's hottest, most dynamic basin; lot fills by mid-morning so go early-ish
11:30 AMSet up camp at Canyon
PMEase into the canyon — Artist Point is calmer late afternoon anyway

Mon Jun 15 · Wildlife Dawn (Canyon)

★ Early start
Canyon sits right next to Hayden Valley. First light for wildlife, then the falls before the buses.
5:00 AMDepart camp (Canyon → Hayden only ~10–15 min)
5:20 AMHayden Valley pullouts at first light — bison herds, best bear/wolf odds. Stay through ~7:30. Binoculars + layers (~35°F) + thermos coffee
8:00 AMGrand Canyon of the Yellowstone — Artist Point + South Rim before the buses (lots fill by 9:30). Lower Falls glows in morning side-light
10:00 AMMud Volcano / Dragon's Mouth on the way back · then recover at camp
DuskOptional second Hayden wildlife window if anyone's game

Canyon Campground · Jun 14–16 · falls & wildlife

Must-do

  • Artist Point — Lower Falls + Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
  • Hayden Valley at dawn/dusk — bison, often bear
  • Hot showers + laundry at Canyon Village

Also worth it

  • Norris Geyser Basin (en route from Madison)
  • Mud Volcano & Dragon's Mouth
  • South Rim trail overlooks

Colter Bay · Jun 16–18 · Grand Teton basecamp

TUEJun 16
Canyon Colter Bay (transition day)

Must-do

  • Jenny Lake shuttle boat + Hidden Falls / Inspiration Point
  • String Lake swim & wade (free, calm, sun-warmed)
  • Jackson day trip (~45 min) — town, museum, ice cream

Also worth it

  • Mormon Row barns at sunrise
  • Colter Bay swim beach + kayak rental
  • Lakeshore trail + ranger talks (another badge)

Teton Morning Game Plan

Three Colter Bay nights means you can spread the early starts out. The dawn plays here are sunrise photography (Mormon Row, Oxbow Bend) and beating the Jenny Lake crowds to the shuttle boat. Colter Bay is central, so drives are short.

Jenny LakeShuttle boat + Hidden Falls trail get mobbed by 9–10. First boat (~7 AM) = quiet trail, easy parking.
Mormon RowThe barns glow at sunrise with the range behind — a true dawn-only photo. Lot is small.
Oxbow BendCalm-water reflections + moose/beaver/elk at first light; just east of Jackson Lake Jct.

Day 1 at Colter Bay · Jenny Lake Dawn

★ Early start
Beat the boat line and the parking crush. The signature Teton outing, crowd-free.
6:15 AMDepart Colter Bay (→ Jenny Lake ~30 min)
6:50 AMPark at Jenny Lake while lots are open · grab the first shuttle boat (7 AM) — no reservations taken; buy tickets at the East Boat Dock and board (runs every 10–15 min)
7:15 AMHidden Falls + Inspiration Point hike — quiet trail, cool morning, best light on the lake
10:00 AMBoat back as the crowds arrive · ease off for lunch
PMString Lake swim & wade (free, calm, sun-warmed) — perfect kid reset

Day 2 at Colter Bay · Sunrise Photo + Jackson

★ Early start
A short sunrise mission, then turn it into the Jackson day trip.
5:00 AMDepart camp for sunrise (dress warm, ~35°F)
5:20 AMOxbow Bend first — mirror-water reflections + dawn wildlife (moose, elk, beaver)
6:00 AMMormon Row barns at sunrise — the iconic shot with the range behind
8:00 AMBreakfast, then continue south to Jackson (~45 min) — town square, antler arches, Wildlife Art museum, ice cream
PMRoll back to camp · Colter Bay swim beach / kayak rental

Day 3 at Colter Bay · Sleep In

Relaxed
Two dawns is plenty with kids. Bank a slow morning before the drive home.
MorningSleep in · slow camp breakfast (make the Outdoor Boys bread)
Late AMColter Bay lakeshore trail + visitor center · last Junior Ranger badge
PMBeach time / kayak · easy dinner · pack what you can for tomorrow's departure
2026 Grand Teton construction — build in bufferMajor roadwork all season. North Park Rd (US 89/191/287) between Leeks Marina & Lizard Creek — right on your Yellowstone↔Colter Bay route — runs one-lane alternating with ~15-min daytime delays (up to an hour 9 PM–6 AM), and gets heavier starting Jun 20 (you leave Jun 19, so you mostly beat it). A new roundabout at the Moose entrance adds ~20-min delays on Teton Park Rd, affecting Jenny Lake and Jackson runs. Mormon Row stays open but with construction noise/equipment. Pad ~30 min on park drives and check nps.gov/grte road conditions before each outing.
Budget-smart waterString Lake and the Colter Bay beach give the kids the water-and-mountains payoff for free — skip the pricey guided floats.

The Drive Home

One flex night between the Tetons and home — pick the town that fits how tired everyone is.
FRIJun 19
Colter Bay 🔶 Flex Night (your pick)
🕚 Depart ~11 AM🔶 Pick the town Friday morning
Trade-offCloser towns = more Teton time Friday but a longer drive Saturday. Farther south = a short, easy Saturday. Lunch in Pinedale (Lakeside on Fremont Lake, or the Grazing Goat) works no matter which you pick — it's on the way for all four.
Four options, north to south Jackson · ~1 hr from Colter Bay · most to do (town square, dinner out), but leaves ~7 hr for Saturday.
Dubois · ~1.3 hr · charming, cheap, on the Wind River route · ~6 hr Saturday.
Pinedale · ~2 hr · Fremont Lake + Mountain Man museum · ~5 hr Saturday.
Rock Springs · ~3.5 hr · least scenic but a hotel pool and the shortest Saturday (~4.5 hr) — the "just get close to home" play.
Quick rule of thumbIf the kids are fried and you want an easy last morning, push to Rock Springs. If everyone's still got gas and wants one more fun evening, stop in Jackson or Dubois and accept a longer Saturday. Book same-day from the road.
SATJun 20
Friday's town Home
🕘 Depart ~8–9 AM🚗 ~4.5–7 hr depending on where you slept
From Rock Springs~4.5 hr via I-80 — lunch in Laramie, Vedauwoo rocks for a last stretch-and-scramble. From Pinedale/Dubois/JacksonAdd 1–2.5 hr; an earlier start keeps you home by mid-afternoon. Either way, fuel up before the last push and home by evening.

Water Plan

Drinking water from sealed jugs; spigots only for dishes & fire.

Three sample 7-night menus

The one recipe everyone wants: Outdoor Boys Bread

Campfire Bread + Honey Butter

Luke's forgiving, no-fuss loaf — works with approximate quantities. Mix it in a zip bag for less mess (kids love this part).
Bread
  • Flour, water, a little yeast, salt, sugar
  • Mix in a gallon zip bag — squeeze & mush until it forms a dough
  • Let it rise while camp gets set up
Honey Butter
  • Softened quality butter + pure honey, mixed to taste
Cook (pick one)
  1. Dutch oven: bake near coals until golden
  2. On coals: lay dough on foil over hot coals, flip halfway
  3. Cast iron: 1–2 Tbsp butter, press dough to thumb-thickness, flip every minute, 2–4 min/side to golden-brown

"That is good." — Luke Nichols

Campfire ruleNo firewood gathering or tree-cutting in Yellowstone or Grand Teton — purchased firewood required at all three campgrounds. Buy at the camp stores.
